Non Western Therapies: a review of Meseron Therapy, what is the way forward?

A number of non-western therapies have been proposed over the years, they derive their impetus from the perspective of indigenous psychology. As defined by Kim and Berry (1993) indigenous psychology is, "the scientific study of human behavior or mind that is native, that is not transported from other regions, and that is designed for its people". Meseron therapy a psychological treatment approach of African origin developed by Alfred Awaritefe (1995) is a case in point. The word "Meseron" among the Urhobos from of Delta State in Southern Nigeria means "I reject it" or "I refuse it': The power of the spoken word, a concept which transcends cultural and religious beliefs is the central core of the therapy.
The usefulness of non-western therapies as it pertains to non-western clients cannot be over emphasized. Despite their necessity they meet with several challenges which limit their ready adoption and applicability in clinical practice. Could the pervasive (nearly universal) acceptance of western diagnostic tools as the primary source of diagnostic features/criteria for psychopathology as noted by Thakker & Ward, (1998) Poznyak, Reed, & Clark, (2011) be the bane of non-western therapies like Meseron psychotherapy? If yes, what is the way forward?
This paper evaluates the views of Nigerian Clinical Psychologists about non-western psychotherapies using Meseron therapy as a case study particularly in relation to knowledge base, adoption and applicability. Evidence thus sought will be used to proffer solutions and make recommendation for the way forward.
