Heart Rate Variability Training for Dissociative Disorders

Dr Kerry Leahan

This presentation will cover the dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system that occurs in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and conditions where dysautonomia is present, such as developmental trauma and PTSD. Therapists often face difficulties when applying de-arousal strategies, such as diaphragmatic breathing, as these can easily throw an already overtaxed nervous system into disarray and create a paradoxical response. A few cases will be presented and discussed from a clinical perspective. Some mention will be made to understanding dissociation from Stephen Porges? Polyvagal theory perspective and the role of the unmyelinated vagal nerve and how RSA/HRV training can be used to help guide the person away from 'fear and hyper vigilance' and towards a calmer equanimitous state.
